Go Green Week 2010
Giving up meat for a day, reducing waste, cycling, and re-cycling are all being promoted with a series of Union-organised events taking place on campus from February 8-12.
The week of green activities is part of the NUS Degrees Cooler scheme, which aims to boost the pro-environmental behaviour of more than 90,000 students and staff across 20 universities in England.
The week kicks off with Meat Free Monday. The livestock industry has been identified as one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, so to encourage people to reduce their meat intake, a range of vegetarian and vegan promotions will be on offer across campus. The Union will be offering 10 per cent off all vegetarian lunchtime meals, meanwhile catering outlets Zest, Vista and the Sainsbury’s Garden Restaurant will offer vegetarian main courses for £3.25 – saving diners 50p as well as the environment.
On Tuesday evening a carbon speed dating event will see students matched to potential dates based on their carbon emissions as part of the regular LCR club night.
Wednesday and Thursday will focus on reducing waste and improving transport with stalls in the Hive and a mass bike ride on Wednesday afternoon along the Marriot Way. Cyclists will depart from behind the LCR at noon for a one or two-hour ride, depending on personal time constraints. All are welcome but helmets are compulsory.
On Friday, movie fans will be asked to bring drinks cans for recycling as the entrance fee for a ‘canned’ film screening of two environmentally-themed movies. I Love Trash is a documentary which follows two men who spend three months living solely on society’s waste. Meanwhile In Transition documents the rise of the transition movement in Britain. Both films take place in room 1.28 in Union House from 6pm.
