IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Council Tax
In the last few weeks you may have received a Council Tax bill from Norwich City Council. If you are not graduating this year you just need to make the Council aware that you are continuing as a student. If you are graduating this year you are liable for Council Tax between the date when you stop being a student (i.e. the end date on your exemption certificate) and the end of your tenancy.
Also, the bill you have been sent may be for an entire year (2013-14), and is therefore far greater than the amount you have to pay.
We can therefore offer you the following advice with regards to making sure you only pay the correct amount:
• Make sure the council knows what the end date of your tenancy is. This means they can adjust the amount that you pay so you only have to pay until the end of your tenancy. You can call on 0344 980 3333, email revenues@norwich.gov.uk or write to them at: Council Tax Department, Norwich City Council, City Hall, Norwich NR2 1NH
• If you are on a low income you can apply for Council Tax Reduction, you can find out more about this here
The amount you are liable for should be between approximately £75 and £100 per month, depending on the size of the property. If you are the only final year student and therefore the only person paying Council Tax you will be eligible for a 25% discount, and when you contact the Council you should advise them of this.
If you’d like any more help you can contact the Union Advice Centre.

Thinking about moving out of your accommodation? In order to safeguard getting your deposit back you need to ensure the property is in the same condition it was when you moved in – excepting “fair wear and tear”, so if it was immaculately clean that’s how you need to return it – you could ask your landlord to visit before you move out and point out anything they feel needs special attention before you leave the property. If people are moving out at different times please agree in advance how you plan to clean and dispose of any unwanted items. If you want to chat anything through please call into the Union Advice Centre – we are open Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm (except Wednesday 11am – 5pm).
Please see the attached for information on how to dispose of large items.
Still looking for accommodation / housemates / have a spare room? If you are interested in attending another Housing Social please contact Home Run – homerun@uea.ac.uk – and we will try and arrange one before the summer break.
